What Is a Media Interview — and Why It Matters
A media interview is a conversation with a journalist or media representative, conducted for the purpose of informing the public. It sounds straightforward. It rarely is.
Every interview is an opportunity — to shape the narrative, demonstrate your organization's values, and build credibility with the community you serve. Done well, a single interview can reinforce trust that took years to build. Done poorly, it can become the clip that defines your organization for a long time.
For government communicators, interviews carry particular weight. You're not representing a brand. You're representing a public institution, and your audience has a stake in what you say and how you say it. They pay for your organization's operations. They live with the decisions it makes.
That's not pressure to add — it's context to keep. Understanding why interviews matter is the foundation of everything that follows in this course.
The three things every interview accomplishes:
- Informs — It conveys facts, updates, and context to the public
- Shapes perception — It communicates your organization's values, competence, and character
- Drives action — It can prompt behavior change, encourage participation, or build support
None of those outcomes happen by accident. They happen because you prepared.
